1-year-old pup surrendered to kill shelter with his favorite blanket, left with no more tears to cry

For a young dog named Hamm, the days don’t seem like they will get any easier. Hamm’s owner didn’t want him anymore, and so she gathered all of his toys, and his beloved dog bed, loaded him into a car, and mercilessly surrendered him to the San Antonio Animal Care Services.

The San Antonio Animal Care Services is not your average shelter to say and write the least. The notoriously high kill facility is grappling with overcrowding, and so “hard decisions” have to be made, to maintain “population control” as one volunteer put it. That means that the dogs and cats trapped inside the facility have just a few weeks and sometimes even just days to find forever families, before they are brought the back, and prepped for euthanasia.

Hamm, who at his young age seems to sense that the stakes are high, can often be found tucked away shaking in his favorite bed, cowering in fear from the noise and chaos that is the San Antonio Animal Care Services. When the lights go out, and everyone goes to sleep, soft and subtle weeping could be heard coming from her kennel space. Hamm cries himself to sleep every night wondering what on earth he did to deserve his new fate. Sad indeed.

  1. This article makes me mad... Here are people who surrendered their dog with all his favorite belongings maybe to the only place they could find and they are bring told they were merciless... Kill shelters give them time and I'm sure they were praying he would find a home... I doubt it was that they didn't want him but more likely that they couldn't keep him, since they handed him over with all his favorite things. It's not like they threw him in the woods in a trash bag and left him to die!!!

    1. If they cared about him, why did they dump him at a HIGH KILL shelter? Why not find him a new home themselves or get in touch with a rescue that won't kill them after just a few days? Sure they could have thrown him out in a trash bag...at least they were that humane, but it's still cruel to dump a pet that's given you all their unconditional love in a place where their future is so uncertain! So very sad!!

  2. This is so sad, would you dump a baby? Same thing, and kill shelters unnecessary enough time will get any dog a forever home .

  3. I want you Hamm. Come join my family at the beach. Im not rich but if i can find a way i will give you the best life

    1. Praise God for you! Have you found out if you can get him?

    2. Im off tomorrow. I'll give them a call

  4. I would do anything to have my beloved pets back with me, but they grew old and ill, and many have passed to the Rainbow Bridge, and I was there when each of them made their journey! I just lost my Snowy Dawn last month to canine dementia at almost 15 years old. I miss her every day. I also have 2 male dogs-both almost 15, and I know their time with me is limited, but I give them all the love I possibly can while I still have them. It disgusts me that people throw animals of any kind away when they tire of them. They have feelings, fears, and souls, most times, a 1000 times larger than the monsters who abandoned them to their deaths. Those who dump animals on shelters should be banned from further animal ownership for LIFE. They don't deserve the unconditional love these precious little souls offer!! Adopt-Don't SHOP! One by one, until there are NONE.

  5. I just got an email that a new comment was posted:

"REAgentValerie has left a new comment on the post "1-year-old pup surrendered to kill shelter with hi...":

I just picked up Hamm and I am his foster mom. This article is FAKE. He was picked up as a stray and the blanket was given to him by the animal control officer. Shame on the person that wrote this, contributing to fake news. If you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the problem."

I don't see this post here. Did someone delete it so we wouldn't know this is a fake post? Shame on you for misleading us dog lovers and shame on you for deleting the fosters comment!

Let's see if you delete this too!

    1. I see your post and others too ... This is not fake news ... they are just not updated regularly and they might not get the correct information but at least they get the word out on some of these poor dogs. I look at this blog all the time and check the updates on petharbor to update this page ... if you don't understand it then don't knock it.

  6. I still don't see REAgentValerie's posts stating that SHE is Hamm's foster mom, nor do I see my second post about this. She is the one stating this is fake. Why would she post this if it wasn't true? I understand completely and I will continue to knock it if I believe it's not true. You state in the Update paragraph that as of March 1, 2018 there "are no updates." But there WAS an update if you saw REAgentValerie's post. Why you are doing this, I don't know, Maybe to make money from ad clicks, but I hope you come to your senses and stop doing it!
